Sweep Elbow
Hot Tubs will maximize the use of sweeping 90 degree elbows instead of the traditional standard 90 degree elbow. The reason for choosing a “sweep” instead of the standard elbow is less water flow restriction and less water turbulence is achieved.
To replace an elbow you will typically need to add in a piece of piping to allow for the section to be cut out. If you do not have the slack in the piping to make the glue joints bottom out, a leak may occur.
Pump Unions
Hot Tubs have several different sizes of spa pump unions (1” to 2 1/2”).
Make sure to check the size of the nut before ordering a replacement Check the condition of the o-ring seal, typically it should be replaced when a pump union is replaced.
Remember to only use a silicone based lubricant on any o-rings used in a hot tub. If a petroleum base lubricant is used, the o-ring may distort and crack due to a chemical reaction with the lubricant and the sanitizer in the water.

Heater Unions
Spa heater unions are typically a one piece union installed when the heater barrel is manufactured, and may not be removable from the heater barrel due to the flange. If this is the case you will need to replace the union with a “split nut” union.
